Planting for year-round interest
"John’s scheme reflected our favourite shades of dusty pinks and mauves"
The planting areas around this country house lacked structure and year-round interest. Working closely with the young professional couple who own the property new planting plans were drawn up. Existing plants were fitted into the plans and moved where necessary.
Winter structure was created by the inclusion of evergreen shrubs such as Euphorbia characias and the use of box balls, evergreen grasses and a number of standard Phillyreas.
Summer and late flowering perennials were underplanted with a large number of tulips, which are followed by different types of alliums.
The borders now offer year-round visual interest as each new season gives way to the next.

"We asked John to design the planting for a large rectangular bed that was lacking a proper focus. John's scheme reflected our favourite shades of dusty pinks and mauves spanning from plentiful bright tulips in spring to astrantias, heucheras, nepetas and other summer perennials right through to carefully chosen sedums in autumn, all of which complemented the existing roses, euphorbia and daphne. John has a skill for finding exactly the right shade of a particular plant. The result is something that we love and which we have enjoyed watching each year as the seasons unfold."
